Polysilicon is a silicon material composed of multiple grains with different orientations, with high purity (usually 99.9999%). It has good conductivity and is easy to combine with other materials. Therefore, it is an important basic material in the solar photovoltaic and electronic semiconductor industries, with a wide range of applications and market demand. In the field of solar cells, polysilicon is the key raw material for photovoltaic solar cells. According to CRI analysis, polysilicon occupies the position of the main raw material in the photovoltaic industry, especially for low-end and medium-end photovoltaic panels. In the field of electronic semiconductors, polysilicon is used to manufacture semiconductor devices such as integrated circuits (ICs) and photoelectric sensors.
China, Germany, the United States, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea are the major polysilicon producing countries in the world. According to CRI analysis, these countries occupy an important position in the global polysilicon market. China occupies a dominant position in the global polysilicon market with its huge production capacity and output. North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific are important consumer markets for polysilicon in the world. Among them, with the attention paid by governments in Southeast Asia to renewable energy policies, the photovoltaic industry has developed rapidly, which has led to a growing demand for polysilicon.
In recent years, Vietnam's photovoltaic industry has developed rapidly. The government has promoted the investment and construction of photovoltaic projects through measures such as FIT (feed-in tariff subsidy policy) and green energy policies. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam has become one of the leading countries in photovoltaic development in Southeast Asia. With the expansion of the photovoltaic industry, the demand for polysilicon in Vietnam has continued to increase. In particular, the construction of large-scale solar power stations has promoted the growth of polysilicon market demand in Vietnam. However, due to insufficient polysilicon production capacity in Vietnam, most polysilicon currently still relies on imports, especially high-purity polysilicon from China, the United States and Europe.
According to CRI data, Vietnam's total polysilicon imports will reach US$1.026 billion in 2023. Market demand will be even stronger in 2024, with the cumulative import value of polysilicon in Vietnam from January to October approaching US$767 million, and it is expected to continue to grow in the next few years.
According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's main import sources of polysilicon include the United States, Germany, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan. Among them, the United States is the primary import source of polysilicon, especially the supply of high-purity and semiconductor-grade polysilicon.
According to CRI analysis, the main sources of polysilicon imported by Vietnam from 2021 to 2024 are the United States, Germany and Malaysia. The main companies exporting polysilicon to Vietnam include WACKER CHEMIE AG, JA SOLAR TRADING LIMITED, SICHUAN JINKO SOLAR CO LTD etc.
The main importers of Vietnam’s polysilicon in 2021-2024 include JINKO SOLAR (VIETNAM) INDUSTRIES COMPANY LIMITIED, TRINA SOLAR (VIETNAM) WAFER COMPANY LIMITED, JA SOLAR NE VIETNAM COMPANY LIMITED etc.
Overall, Vietnam's polysilicon market is expanding with the rapid development of Vietnam's local photovoltaic and semiconductor industries, especially the growing demand for polysilicon in the solar photovoltaic field. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's polysilicon production capacity is very limited, so Vietnam's polysilicon market still relies heavily on imported products.
CRI predicts that in the long run, Vietnam has the potential to reduce its dependence on imports by attracting more investment and increasing the local production capacity of polysilicon. However, within five years, Vietnam's polysilicon imports will continue to grow. CRI recommends that companies related to the polysilicon industry chain conduct early research on the Vietnamese market and prepare for entering the Vietnamese market.
