Float glass is a type of flat glass produced by the float process. Due to its excellent optical properties, high flatness, and uniform thickness, float glass is widely used in many fields such as construction, automobile industry, home appliances and electronic products, furniture, solar energy, and public transportation.
Float glass comes in two types: clear glass and tinted glass. Most of the flat glass made from float glass is clear glass, which lets about 75% to 92% of visible light through, depending on its thickness. Tinted glass (also called heat-absorbing glass) is made by adding colorants to the batch mixture, which include bronze, gray, green, and blue. As the glass gets thicker, the density of the color increases, which can cause the glass to transmit less visible light. The light transmittance of tinted glass ranges from 14% to 83%.
According to CRI analysis, the United States, Japan, China, Germany and other countries are the main producers of float glass in the world. These countries have mature manufacturing industries and advanced industrial bases, and have strong float glass manufacturing capabilities.
North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are important consumer markets for float glass in the world. The Asia Pacific region is the world's largest consumer market for float glass, especially India and Southeast Asian countries. Economic growth, accelerated urbanization and rapid development of the construction and automotive industries in these regions have driven high demand for float glass.
According to CRI analysis, with the rapid development of Vietnam's construction industry, infrastructure construction and electronic product manufacturing, Vietnam's float glass market is in a rapid growth stage. Vietnam is experiencing a rapid urbanization process, which has driven the demand for float glass in the construction and infrastructure industries.
In addition, Vietnam is one of the world's major bases for the manufacture of electronic products, especially smartphones, televisions and computers, which has greatly driven the demand for float glass. Vietnam is one of the fastest growing countries in Southeast Asia in terms of automobile market. In particular, the manufacturing and sales of passenger cars and commercial vehicles are rising rapidly, which has directly boosted the market demand for float glass in Vietnam.
At the same time, although Vietnam's local float glass production capacity has increased in recent years, compared with the world's major glass manufacturing powers, Vietnam's float glass production capacity is still relatively limited and mainly concentrated in the mid- and low-end markets, so Vietnam's float glass products still rely heavily on imports.
According to CRI data, the total value of Vietnam's float glass imports reached US$214 million in 2023. The market demand was even stronger in 2024. From January to November, the cumulative value of Vietnam's float glass imports was close to US$219 million, an increase of about 11.83% compared with the import value from January to November 2023. It is expected to continue to grow in the next few years.
According to CRI analysis, the main import sources of Vietnamese float glass include China, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, the United States, South Korea and other places. Malaysia has become the most important import source of Vietnamese float glass due to its geographical proximity and high cost-effectiveness. The main import sources of Vietnamese float glass from 2021 to 2024 were the United Kingdom, Malaysia and South Korea.
According to CRI analysis, the main companies exporting this product to Vietnam include PILKINGTON TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT, CORNING SPECIALTY MATERIALS INC, XINYI ENERGY SMART MALAYSIA SDN and other companies. The main importers of Vietnamese float glass in 2021-2024 are mainly foreign-funded enterprises in the Vietnamese market, including FIRST SOLAR VIET NAM MANUFACTURING, SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS VIETNAM, INTOPS VIETNAM CO LTD and other companies.
Vietnam's float glass market is expanding with the rapid growth of the construction, infrastructure and electronics manufacturing industries, especially the growing demand for float glass in the automotive, electronics and home sectors. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's local float glass production capacity is limited, and Vietnam will still import a certain amount of float glass every year in the next few years. CRI recommends that global glass manufacturers should investigate the Vietnamese market as soon as possible to discover business opportunities in the Vietnamese float glass market.
