Flash Memory is a non-volatile memory and an indispensable core component in the modern electronics industry. It can keep data intact in the event of a power outage and is widely used in consumer electronics, computer storage, embedded systems, and industrial and IoT devices.
Flash memory is divided into two types: NAND and NOR. NAND has become the mainstream due to its high storage density and low cost. NOR is used for program code storage due to its fast reading capability. Its outstanding features include low power consumption, high storage density, fast reading and writing, and good durability. It is an important choice to replace traditional mechanical hard disk and optical disk storage.
Flash memory is a memory chip that is closely related to the semiconductor industry. It is manufactured based on silicon transistor technology and relies on high-precision semiconductor manufacturing equipment and technology, including photolithography machines, etching equipment, and thin film deposition equipment. According to CRI analysis, the flash memory production process is complex, involving silicon wafer preparation, storage unit design, packaging, and testing. Flash memory can be used as a standalone chip in embedded systems, or it can be packaged into a memory card or drive, such as an SD card, USB flash drive, and solid-state drive (SSD). These are all storage devices composed of flash memory chips as the core, supplemented by controller chips and interface circuits.
As a type of memory, the upstream of the flash memory industry chain includes raw material suppliers such as silicon wafers, electronic chemicals, and high-purity gases; the downstream covers consumer electronics manufacturers, data centers, and embedded system developers. The world's major flash memory manufacturers include Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Western Digital, Micron and Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory).
In recent years, Vietnam's status in the global flash memory consumer market has gradually increased, and the scale of Vietnam's flash memory market has expanded year by year. However, Vietnam does not have independent flash memory manufacturing capabilities. According to CRI analysis, Vietnam imports flash memory chips from overseas markets for the assembly and manufacturing of electronic products. With Samsung, LG and other companies setting up production bases in Vietnam, Vietnam has become one of the important electronic product assembly bases in the world, especially in the fields of smartphones, tablets and other consumer electronics, which has promoted the growth of Vietnam's flash memory market. Vietnam's flash memory imports are mainly to meet the needs of the electronics manufacturing industry, and export terminal products to the global market.
Vietnam's export growth is due to the rapid development of its electronics manufacturing industry and its low-cost manufacturing advantages, but flash memory, as a core component, cannot be produced locally in Vietnam and can only rely on imports. As Vietnam's electronics industry continues to grow, the size of Vietnam's flash memory market will continue to expand.
According to CRI data, Vietnam's total flash memory imports reached US$44 million in 2023. From January to October 2024, Vietnam's cumulative flash memory imports amounted to approximately US$60 million, an increase of approximately 73% over the same period in 2023. Vietnam's flash memory market is expanding rapidly and is expected to maintain a relatively fast growth rate in the next few years.
According to CRI analysis, the main sources of Vietnam's flash memory imports from 2021 to 2024 include Hong Kong, China, Singapore and other places. The main companies exporting this product to Vietnam include WESTERN DIGITAL (SINGAPORE) PTE LTD, KINGSTON DIGITAL INTERNATIONAL LIMITED, ETERNAL ASIA (VIETNAM) PTE LTD etc.
The main importers of flash memory in Vietnam are manufacturers and distributors related to the electronics manufacturing industry. According to CRI analysis, these include SPRING PERMANENT COMPUTER JOINT STOCK COMPANY, DRAGON LOGISTICS CO, LTD, VIETNAM ACCTON TECHNOLOGY COMPANY etc.
With the development of Vietnam's economy and the electronics manufacturing industry, CRI predicts that the scale of Vietnam's flash memory market will continue to grow in the next few years. Since Vietnam cannot currently produce flash memory, it is expected that Vietnam's flash memory imports will continue to grow in the next few years. CRI recommends that global flash memory manufacturers should conduct timely research on the Vietnamese market and make plans for entering the Vietnamese market.
