Aluminum alloy sheets are metal sheets made by mixing aluminum with other metallic elements such as magnesium, copper, zinc, and silicon in specific proportions. The addition of different alloying elements enhances the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloy sheets compared to pure aluminum. These characteristics make them widely used in various industries, including construction, transportation, home appliances, electronics, packaging, shipbuilding, and aerospace. According to CRI, the application scope of aluminum alloy sheets continues to expand, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region and other emerging markets, which show robust growth potential.
Major global producers of aluminum alloy sheets include the United States, Japan, China, Russia, Germany, and South Korea. Among these, China leads the market with its vast production capacity and global market share, while Russia and the United States hold prominent positions in the high-end market segment. These countries benefit from advanced industrial bases and strong manufacturing capabilities for aluminum alloy sheets. On the demand side, North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region represent significant consumption markets for aluminum alloy sheets. CRI indicates that rapid urbanization and industrialization in Southeast Asia have driven strong demand for aluminum alloy sheets in the construction and manufacturing sectors, particularly with the emergence of manufacturing hubs.
As an emerging manufacturing base, Vietnam’s aluminum alloy sheet market is growing rapidly, particularly in the construction, electronics, and home appliance sectors. Vietnam’s fast-paced economic growth, coupled with substantial government investments in infrastructure development, has significantly boosted demand for aluminum alloy sheets. Moreover, the rapid development of Vietnam’s electronics and home appliance manufacturing industries, supported by the influx of foreign investment, has further propelled demand. However, Vietnam’s domestic production capacity for aluminum alloy sheets remains limited and is mainly concentrated in the mid-to-low-end market. As a result, a significant proportion of high-end aluminum alloy sheets continues to rely on imports.
CRI data shows that Vietnam’s total aluminum alloy sheet imports reached USD 967 million in 2023. From January to July 2024, cumulative imports amounted to approximately USD 1.209 billion, reflecting even higher demand. This trend is expected to persist in the coming years.
According to CRI, Vietnam’s primary sources of aluminum alloy sheet imports include China, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Japan. China has emerged as a key supplier, driven by its geographical proximity, comprehensive industrial chain, and cost-effective products. From 2021 to 2024, China, South Korea, and Thailand were the top three sources of Vietnam’s aluminum alloy sheet imports. Leading exporters to Vietnam include companies such as Crown Asia Pacific Holdings Pte Ltd, TBC-Ball Beverage Can Holdings Ltd, and Samsung Electronics H.K. Co. Ltd. On the importing side, key Vietnamese companies include Sewon Vina Company Limited, Samsung Display Vietnam Co. Ltd, and Saturn Engineering Systems Vietnam.
Overall, Vietnam’s aluminum alloy sheet market is in a rapid growth phase, supported by increasing demand from domestic construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects. CRI projects that, due to Vietnam’s limited local production capacity for aluminum alloy sheets, the country’s reliance on imports will continue to grow in the coming years.
