Research Report on China's Lithography Machine Import 2023-2032
Photolithography is the most critical technology in chip manufacturing, which determines the precision of semiconductor lines as well as the power consumption and performance of the chip. Lithography is the core equipment in chip manufacturing. Due to the difficulty of developing lithography machines, the lithography machines used in China's chip manufacturing industry are heavily dependent on imports.
In 2021, China imported 406 units of lithography machines, up 69.87% year-on-year, with an import value of US$1.141 billion, down 38.47% year-on-year. According to CRI analysis, from January to October 2022, China imported 271 units of lithography machines, down 20.76% year-on-year, with an import value of US$1.237 billion, up 49.72% year-on-year.
From 2018 to October 2022, the average price of China's lithography machine imports fluctuates widely. From 2018 to 2020, the average price of China's lithography machine imports grows continuously, from US$4,356,000 per unit in 2018 to US$7,761,100 per unit in 2020. According to CRI analysis, in 2021, the average price of China's lithography imports plummeted to US$281.11 per unit, down 63.78% y-o-y. From January to October 2022, the average price of China's photolithography imports increased 88.95% y-o-y to US$456.56 per unit.
In 2021, China imported lithography machines from a total of 11 countries and regions. CRI analysis, by import volume, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States and Austria are the main sources of China's lithography machine imports. Among them, Japan is the main importer of lithography machines in China.
In 2021, China imported 283 lithography machines from Japan, accounting for 69.70% of total lithography machine imports in that year, and the import value of $352 million, accounting for 30.86% of the total import value. By import volume, then the Netherlands is the main source of China's lithography imports, mainly because ASML is located in the Netherlands. 2021, China imported US$ 766 million of Dutch lithography, accounting for 67.15% of the total import volume, and 75 units, accounting for 18.47% of the total import volume.
CRI expects that in the short term it will be difficult for China's locally manufactured semiconductor equipment such as lithography to cover all the needs of Chinese chip companies, so China's lithography imports are expected to continue to rise in 2023-2032.
