Research Report on China's Ion Implanter Import 2023-2032
Silicon can function as a semiconductor only after adding the right amount of impurities to change its structure and electrical properties, a process known as doping. Ion implanter is the only method that can precisely control the doping and can repeatedly control the concentration and depth of doping, and is the mainstream technology of doping process for chip manufacturing. Ion implanters can be broadly classified into High Current Ion Implanter, Medium Current Ion Implanter and High Energy Ion Implanter.
Due to the difficulty of technology development, Chinese local enterprises are not yet able to produce enough ion implanters to meet the needs of China's IC manufacturing industry, so China needs to import a considerable number of ion implanters every year.
In 2021, China imported 384 units of ion implanter, up 66.96% year-on-year, with an import value of US$913 million, up 48.35% year-on-year. From January to October 2022, China imported 2,350 units of ion implanter, up 648.41% year-on-year, with an import value of US$885 million, up 22.80% year-on-year.
CRI analysis, from 2018-2022, China's ion implanter import price shows an overall change trend of first increase and then decrease. In 2018-2020, China's ion implanter imports average price increases continuously, from US$2,087,200 per unit in 2018 to US$2,675,100 per unit in 2020. In 2021-2022, the average price of China's ion implanter imports decreases continuously. From January to October 2022, the average price of China's ion implanter imports is US$ 376,700 per unit, down 83.59% year-on-year.
The source of China's ion implanter imports is more concentrated. In 2021, China imported ion implanter from seven countries and regions, including the U.S., Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the U.K., Taiwan, China, and France. According to CRI's analysis, the U.S. is the largest importer of ion implanters in China. In 2021, China imported 234 units of ion implanters from the U.S., accounting for 60.94% of the total ion implanters imported in that year, with an import value of US$611 million, accounting for 66.89% of the total import value.
CRI expects that in the short term, it will be difficult for locally manufactured semiconductor equipment such as ion implanters in China to cover all the needs of Chinese chip companies, so China's ion implanters imports are expected to continue to rise in the 2023-2032 period.
