Research Report on China's Bird's Nest Import 2023-2032
Bird's nest is a culinary ingredient and tonic made from the saliva and other substances secreted by some swifts and golden swiftlets. It is rich in salivary acids, hydrolyzed amino acids and proteins, and is made from saliva after manual removal of fluff and other debris. With the development of China's economy, the standard of living of the population has improved, and the awareness of health and wellness has increased, bird's nest has changed from a luxury product to a modern tonic for the masses.
As China's local production of bird's nest is very low, the Chinese market is dominated by imported bird's nest products. According to CRI's analysis, in 2021, China imported 352.52 tons of bird's nest, up 2.17% year-on-year, with an import value of US$545 million, up 0.74% year-on-year. From January to November 2022, China imported 454.98 tons of bird's nest, up 45.39% year-on-year, with an import value of US$611 million, up 25.60% year-on-year.
Due to the restricted origin of bird's nest, China imports bird's nest from a total of 6 countries and regions around the world in 2021. CRI analyzes that Indonesia and Malaysia are the major sources of bird's nest imports into China by export volume, with imports from both countries accounting for over 99.9% of China's total bird's nest imports in 2021.
Indonesia is China's largest source of bird's nest imports. In 2021, China imported 221.95 tons of bird's nest from Indonesia, accounting for 62.96% of total bird's nest imports in that year, with an import value of US$350 million, accounting for 64.23% of the total import value.
China's domestic production of bird's nest is low and the country needs to rely heavily on imports of bird's nest. CRI expects the market size of bird's nest in China to continue to rise during 2023-2032, contributing to the rise in imports of bird's nest in China.
