In industry, tannins are an essential ingredient in the chemical staining of wood and are already present in woods such as oak, walnut and mahogany. Tannins can be applied to wood that is low in tannins, so chemical stains that require tannins will react. Tannic acid is a common mordant in the dyeing of cellulosic fibers such as cotton, usually in combination with alum and/or iron. Similarly, tannic acid can also be used as a post-treatment agent to improve the wash fastness properties of acid-dyed polyamides. It is also an alternative to fluorocarbon post-treatments to impart stain repellency to polyamide yarns or carpets. Tannic acid is used to protect ferrous (iron-based) metal objects to passivate and inhibit corrosion. Tannic acid reacts with corrosion products to form more stable compounds, preventing further corrosion from occurring. Tannic acid residues are often left on the object after treatment, so if moisture reaches the surface, the tannic acid will be rehydrated and prevent or slow any corrosion. The tannic acid treatment used for conservation is very effective and widely used, but it does have a dramatic visual effect on the object, blackening the products of corrosion and turning any exposed metal a dark blue.
