France Plastic Waste Management Market Overview, 2028

France Plastic Waste Management Market Overview, 2028

France was the first country in the world to ban disposable plastic plates, cups, and utensils in 2016. In 2020, France also banned all single-use plastic items, including cotton buds, straws, and cutlery. France has implemented an extended producer responsibility scheme, which makes manufacturers and importers of plastic products responsible for the costs of collection, sorting, and recycling. The country has set a target to recycle 100% of plastics by 2025. France has implemented a tax on plastic packaging since 2019, which has generated revenue for waste management initiatives and incentivized companies to use more sustainable packaging materials. The country has introduced a ""Plastic Odyssey"" program, which is a three-year, round-the-world expedition focused on finding solutions for plastic waste management. In 2018, France launched a national plan to combat plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea. The French government has also invested in developing bioplastics, which are derived from renewable resources and are biodegradable. France has established partnerships with other countries, such as Indonesia, to address plastic pollution in the oceans. The country has also implemented education and awareness campaigns to encourage citizens to reduce their use of plastic and increase recycling rates.

According to the research report “France Plastic Waste Management Market Overview, 2028,"" published by Bonafide Research, the market is expected to add USD 57.95 Million in the upcoming period, 2023–2028. Recycling dominates the market for plastic waste in France based on service type, which comprises collection and transportation, recycling, incineration, and landfills. One of the top recyclers in the world is France. In fact, recycling accounts for over 30% of France's waste stream, which is remarkable given that the nation has just over 66 million citizens. Over 70% of the municipal waste that was collected was treated at waste disposal facilities, including recycling and waste valorization. However, landfills held 25% of the municipal waste that was collected. The recycling rate was 28% for the household plastic packaging and 26% for the industrial and commercial packaging (with 1 154 000 tons of plastic packaging waste from the household sector and 1 236 254 tons from the industrial and commercial sector).

The country's market for plastic packaging is likely to be impacted by the nation's expanding prohibitions against the use of plastic. For instance, the French Parliament's lower chamber passed a law in December 2020 that will outlaw all single-use plastic products and packaging after 2028 in addition to a number of initiatives to increase reuse and recycling. Several environmentalists argued that the 2028 deadline should be accelerated, as well as the targets for banning plastic straws, plates, cups, and silverware beginning in 2021 rather than 2020 as originally intended. The country has been witnessing a mixed environment for the use and ban of plastic. The environment ministry said on October 11, 2021, that France will ban plastic packaging for nearly all fruit and vegetables from January 2022 to reduce plastic waste. According to estimates, 37% of fruits and vegetables are sold packaged, and it is anticipated that the move will stop more than one billion unnecessary plastic packaging items from being produced annually.

Further, the growing concerns regarding the use of plastics across various end-user industries and among their customers are affecting the use of plastics. For instance, the cosmetic vendors in the country are keen on tackling the industry's plastic problem; hence, they are developing sustainable solutions for major players. Moreover, recently, France banned plastic packaging for most fruits and vegetables. By the end of June this year, plastic packing for cherry tomatoes, green beans, and peaches will be prohibited. Endives, asparagus, mushrooms, certain salads, and herbs will no longer be sold in plastic packaging by the end of next year. By June 2026, plastic will no longer be used to market raspberries, strawberries, and other delicate berries. Due to a few number of firms possessing a majority of the market, France's plastic packaging market is consolidated. The market is highly concentrated due to the presence of major players like Amcor plc, Coveris Management GmbH, Berry Global Inc., Sealed Air Corporation, and Constantia Flexibles International GmbH, among others, and the fact that plastic packaging demand has been rising significantly in the France region. A barrier to new entrants is created by the companies' ongoing involvement in the development of new products.
October 2022: The French government announced plans to make bottles made from recycled plastic less expensive than those made from new plastic as part of a larger plan to intensify regulations on plastic use. Other aspects of the project include increasing landfill taxes and lowering the value-added tax on recycling activities. The new measures are in addition to France's action on food waste and imminent laws concerning fashion industry waste.
April 2022: PACCOR, a developer of rigid packaging solutions, decided to start making DuoSmart cups in France by the end of the year. The investment by PACCOR France intends to diversify output while also assisting the company's transition to a circular economy. The French government supports the action as a component of the France Recovery Plan. DuoSmart cup is a hybrid cardboard/plastic packaging option for food, particularly dairy goods. It is created by fusing a PP/rPP or PET/rPET insert with a cardboard sleeve, aiding in total material separability.

April 2022: Westfalia Fruit's business in France launched a new range of environmentally and consumer-friendly packaging for avocados that dramatically reduces and replaces the use of plastic, eliminating the use of black plastic, which is difficult to recycle, while successfully maintaining fruit quality. These industry-leading initiatives were stringently researched and developed before a new law banning plastic packaging on most fruit and vegetables came into effect in France on New Year's Day, 2022.

The covid-19 pandemic led to a staggering use of single use plastics across various end-user industries such as medical, commercial, households, industrial & food disposables products. Further, the decline in collection rates owing to disruption in waste collections and labour shortages amidst these challenging times affected the recycling business tremendously. While the covid 19 crisis increased the consumptions of plastic products, recycling rates have not evolved in tandem with the spike in demand for plastics, which negatively affected the plastic recycling market. However, the growing awareness about the plastic pollution and stringent government measures are expected to positively impact France plastic recycling market during the forecast period.
Some of the plastic waste management companies in France are France Plastiques Recyclage, Plastic Recycling, Polyloop, Polyrex, DS Smith Recycling, Plastic Loop, Reviplast, XLRecycling Montbrison, Ereplast, Recytherm and many more.
