China E-Waste Management Market Overview, 2028
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a growing problem in China, due to the rapid increase in electronic devices and the country's growing economy. The improper disposal of e-waste can result in environmental pollution and health problems, making it important for the Chinese government and industry to develop responsible e-waste management solutions. The increasing sale of electronic and electrical devices as well as hesitance to repair defective devices is rising e-waste volume continuously each year. Users often refrain from repair of defective or obsolete products, as, in some cases, the repair cost exceeds price of brand new device. This has resulted in the rapid increase of e-waste each year. In addition to this, dumping of e-waste from developed regions to developing countries such as China is creating numerous opportunities for effective management of e-waste. China is important in the global EEE industry for two reasons: it is the world's most populous country, so domestic demand for EEE is high, and it has a robust EEE manufacturing industry. Furthermore, China is a major player in the refurbishment, reuse, and recycling of e-waste.
According to the research report “China E-waste Management Market Overview, 2028, published by Bonafide Research, the market is expected to add USD 10.05 billion by 2028. The rapid expansion of the electronics industry is creating a positive Research Report for the market. Product innovation and the introduction of new devices have resulted in an increase in the sale of electronic devices. This has increased the disposal of old electronics, which has aided market growth. In line with this, rising environmental consciousness among consumers as a result of the negative impact of increasing waste volume, which leads to adverse health hazards, is positively impacting market growth. Furthermore, various technological advancements, such as the immediate integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify, sort, and categorise waste, are propelling market growth. Furthermore, the scarcity of precious metals such as gold, platinum, silver, and indium is facilitating the need for e-waste management in order to manufacture new devices from recycled components with a lower carbon footprint. This, in turn, has a positive impact on market growth. Other factors, such as rising consumer spending power to afford premium-priced electronic devices and the implementation of several government initiatives to raise awareness about proper e-waste disposal, are expected to lead the market forward. The e-waste market is segmented into three categories: source (household appliances, consumer electronics, and industrial electronics), material (metal, plastic, and glass), and application (trash and recycled).
The e-waste management market in China is segmented by source type: household appliances, consumer electronics, and industrial electronics. Household appliances are those appliances that are used in a household, such as air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, drying cabinets, freezers, refrigerators, kitchen stoves, water heaters, washing machines, trash compactors, microwave ovens, and induction cookers, among others. Mobile devices, wearables, TVs, set-top boxes, monitors, laptops, tablets, computers, printers, scanners, and so on are examples of consumer electronics. IT & Telecom Equipment, IT Accessories, PCBs, Digital Boards, Datacenters, Medical Equipment and Accessories, and so on are examples of industrial appliances. During the forecast period, household appliances are expected to dominate the China e-waste management market.
The e-waste management market in China is divided into three categories: metal, plastic, and glass. Because metals recovered from e-waste are very valuable, the metals segment is expected to dominate the market for e-waste management during the forecast period. Metals recovered from e-waste include aluminium, ferrous metals, copper, gold, and silver.
The e-waste management market in China is divided into two segments: trashed and recycled. Due to an increase in E waste and certain government initiatives to improve E waste management, which are major drivers of the China E waste management market, the recycling segment is expected to dominate the China E waste management market.
China’s e-waste usually comes from three major sources: households, institutional sources (including schools, hospitals, and governmental agencies and businesses), and equipment manufacturers. Electric appliances were rapidly increasing in China. Personal computers, in particular, have seen the most growth. The Chinese central government launched the buy a new one with a used one policy in June 2009 (the Replacement of Household Electrical Appliance Program, effected from June 2009 to May 2010) in nine pilot provinces and cities, such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. The laws on e-waste management in China establish some principles for the design and manufacture of electronic and electric equipment, as well as the disposal of e-waste, whereas the solid waste pollution control law requires e-waste treatment enterprises to first obtain a licence from local environmental protection agencies in order to safely deal with hazardous and toxic materials contained in e-waste. Guiyu is the e-waste capital of China.
E-waste recycling systems in China Generally, there are three channels for e-waste recycling to transfer its e-waste to China. Second-hand markets are the first stop for such e-waste, where it can be sold at reasonable prices. These e-wastes still function normally and can be reused after minor repairs or upgrades. Rural populations are the major consumers of such products due to their lower incomes. This channel also extended the lives of these electronic devices. The second channel is that owners of e-waste would like to donate their obsolescent home appliances to those poor people living in western China or rural areas, but such behaviours are forbidden according to the national regulations, although some such actions still occur. The third channel is that e-waste owners sell their obsolescent e-waste to peddlers, and then peddlers sell such e-waste to e-waste dealers. This channel is now the major channel for e-waste in China due to its large quantities.
Electronic product sales are increasing as a result of rapid technological advancement and frequent product innovations. Mobile devices, televisions, and computer devices, in particular, are rapidly expanding around the world. The sale of these electronics is steadily increasing due to rising purchasing power and disposable income. Furthermore, the introduction of new products with updated features and added services entices customers to replace their old products with new ones. As a result, the device's lifespan has been reduced to 3–4 years. As a result, e-waste is growing at an alarming rate, prompting industry players to expand their operations and build a large network of e-waste collection and processing facilities.
COVID 19 IMPACT
This e-waste management industry was suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a halt in e-waste recycling and collection. Furthermore, the sudden increase in COVID-19 infections halted production. Furthermore, trade restrictions hampered economic progress and limited mobility. However, the reinstatement of lockdown restrictions enabled manufacturers to increase their activity and improve their market position. These factors aided the growth of the industry.
