Definition and Applications
Definition: Brushless direct current motors or Electronic Commutation motors, abbreviated as BLDC motors or EC motors, are three-phase current synchronous machines: The rotor moves synchronously with the AC voltage delivered to the windings, following a rotational magnetic field.
This motor is commonly referred to as brushless direct current motors since they replace direct current motors with brushes in numerous applications (brushed DC or commutator motors). The direct current voltage is applied in a brushed DC motor, generating a speed-independent alternating current employing a mechanical inverter in the motor – the brushes.
The high-energy permanent magnets provide high acceleration rates, combined with very high efficiency and speeds of up to 14,000 rpm. BLDC motors can also be employed in applications that need accurate positioning when combined with an encoder.
The BLDC motor delivers high performance comparable to a brushed DC motor when combined with an electronic drive controller that converts the fed-in direct current into an alternating current. BLDC motors are also referred to as EC (electronically commutated) motors to differentiate them from mechanically commutated motors with brushes.
Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is another commonly used term to describe BLDC Motors. A permanent magnet is used here to distinguish it from other synchronous motors that employ a field winding on the rotor, but the BLDC is always powered, whereas the BLDC motor remains permanently energized. In simple terms, the motor rotor generates a magnetic field through a permanent magnet even if the stator is not energized.
Frameless brushless dc motors are ideal in medical appliances and the production of small tools and parts, as assemblies may be easily constructed and inserted directly into the equipment or device. In addition to being cost-effective, it is also conducive to regulating the weight of a finished motor.
Applications: DC motors are used in a wide range of applications such as in aerospace, medical, petroleum, oil drilling applications, industrial machinery, power tools, toys, laser printers, humanoid robots, industrial robots, electric wheelchairs, hard drives, air conditioners, refrigerators, electric fans, autonomous vehicles, an actuator for automobiles, and others.
Advantages:
Higher power density and efficiency than induction motors (approx. 35% volume and weight reduction with the same output).
Precision ball bearings provide long service life and silent operation.
Because of the linear torque curve, there is a wide speed range with full motor output and reduced electrical interference emission.
Brushless DC motors provide excellent heat dissipation than brushed DC motors since the windings are usually situated outside the rotor.
Lower operating temperatures can assist extend the motors' life and duty cycle.
Mechanically interchangeable with stepper motors, resulting in lower construction costs and a greater choice of parts.
Brushless DC motors do not use brushes, and they do not require brush maintenance.
Restraints:
Economic changes in global markets.
Pricing pressures resulting from competition.
New players are making their presence in the market.
Disruption in the global supply chain.
Global microchip shortage affecting the automotive industry.
