Unlike two-winding transformers, power is transferred both inductively and conductively in autotransformers. The autotransformers are used as starters for induction motors and synchronous motors, known as autotransformer starters, in labs for obtaining a varying voltage, in voltage stabilizers as regulating transformers, and as booster transformers to raise the voltage in AC feeders the autotransformer is used.

Variable Auto Transformers can adjust the voltage to the load smoothly from zero to the rated supply voltage. If the supply voltage was tapped at some point along the primary winding, the output secondary voltage could potentially be higher than the actual supply voltage.

Autotransformers are employed for small voltage changes. In substations, where large voltage variations are unnecessary, the autotransformers can replace large, expensive power transformers. Additionally, autotransformers have better voltage regulation than conventional transformers, and utilities install autotransformers to provide different voltage points along its winding. However, due to the lack of primary to secondary winding isolation, these transformers are not appropriate for stepping down higher voltages.

Autotransformers are typically used to convert local distribution supply voltage to some other secondary voltage on the secondary side required for specific electrical devices. This conversion is often from 125 Volts to 250 Volts or 250 Volts to 125 Volts. Unlike isolation transformers, variable autotransformers use a single winding and offer no interference or disturbance. In addition, the autotransformer supports a load equal to its rated value whether connected in the 125 Volts to 250 Volts configuration or the 250 Volts to 125 Volts configuration.
