Microdermabrasion Devices Market By Type (Diamond Microdermabrasion Devices, Crystal Microdermabrasion Devices), By Application (Acne and Scars, Photo Damage, Anti Ageing, Hyperpigmentation, Stretch Marks, Other Applications), By End User (Hospitals and Dermatology Clinics, Spas and Beauty Centers, Home Use): Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2021-2031
The global microdermabrasion devices market accounted for $333.78 million in 2021, and is expected to reach $882.08 million by 2031, registering a CAGR of 10.2% from 2022 to 2031.
Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a non-invasive epidermal resurfacing procedure used to treat uneven skin tone/texture, photoaging, striae, melasma, and scars, including acne scars. It is widely available and one of the most common nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. MDA was first introduced in 1985 by Marini and Lo Brutto as a less aggressive alternative to chemical peels and dermabrasion. The MDA procedure can be performed in the outpatient setting (medical office or medical spa) by a trained clinician, aesthetician, medical assistant, or nurses without the use of anesthesia.
During the procedure, abrasive crystals are propelled against skin under the control of a handheld vacuum system. Crystals cause gentle mechanical abrasion to the skin, which ultimately removes stratum corneum layer of the epidermis. As part of the wound healing process, new epidermis forms with enhanced cosmesis. The technique is considered safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types and complications are minimal. In addition to cosmetic benefits of MDA, studies have also shown improved skin permeability and enhanced delivery of transdermal medications dosed on an area of the skin treated with MDA.
The microdermabrasion devices market is expected to experience significant market growth during the forecast period, owing to rise in skin-related conditions, increased consumer disposable income, and global acceptance of non-invasive procedures for skin beautification. In addition, growing geriatric population, advanced microdermabrasion devices, and increase in growth of the dermatology industry further facilitates growth of the market. However, reimbursement issues and clinical risk and complications associated with dermatology procedures are expected to impede the market growth. In contrast, rise in demand in emerging markets, increase in R&D activities to develop new dermatological products and surge in healthcare spending are anticipated to provide significant growth opportunities for the microdermabrasion devices market.
