Microarray Market By Product & Services (Consumable, Instruments, Software and Services), By Type (DNA Microarray, Protein Microarray, Other Microarray), By End User (Research and Academic Institutes, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Companies, Diagnostic Laboratories, Other End Users): Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2021-2031
The global microarray market was valued at $3,947.18 million in 2021, and is projected to reach $8,399.97 million by 2031, registering a CAGR of 7.8% from 2022 to 2031.
The microarray is a laboratory tool used to detect the expression of thousands of genes at the same time. DNA microarrays are microscope slides that are printed with thousands of tiny spots in defined positions, with each spot containing a known DNA sequence or gene. DNA microarrays are used in clinical diagnostic tests for some diseases. Sometimes they are also used to determine which drugs might be best prescribed for particular individuals, because genes determine how our bodies handle the chemistry related to those drugs. With the advent of new DNA sequencing technologies, some of the tests for which microarrays were used in the past now use DNA sequencing instead. But microarray tests still tend to be less expensive than sequencing, so they may be used for very large studies, as well as for some clinical tests. The principle behind microarrays is that the unknown DNA molecules are cut into fragments by restriction endonucleases; fluorescent markers are attached to these DNA fragments. These are then allowed to react with probes of the DNA chip. Then the target DNA fragments along with complementary sequences bind to the DNA probes. The remaining DNA fragments are washed away. The target DNA pieces can be identified by their fluorescence emission by passing a laser beam. A computer is used to record the pattern of fluorescence emission and DNA identification. This technique of employing DNA chips is very rapid, besides being sensitive and specific for the identification of several DNA fragments simultaneously.
The global microarray market is anticipated to show significant market growth during the forecast period, owing to increase in number of on-going R&D activities, increase in government support for research and development activities and increase in healthcare expenditure. Furthermore, rise in the incidence of cancer, the rapidly evolving information and software technology and emerging bioinformatics are considerably contributing toward the market growth. However, limitations of microarray analysis technology and lack of skilled professionals are negatively impacting the market growth. Conversely, the surge in applications of microarray technique in medical field offers the lucrative opportunities for the growth of the market.
