Autonomous Mobile Robot Market By Type (Goods to person picking robots, Self driving forklifts, Autonomous inventory robots, Unmanned aerial vehicles), By Application (Sorting, Pick and Place, Tugging, Warehouse Fleet Management, Others), By End User (Warehouse or Distribution Center, Manufacturing, Others): Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2022-2032
Autonomous mobile robots are robots that use onboard sensors to autonomously transport products throughout a workplace without building additional alterations to the structure of the building. Autonomous mobile robots employ these onboard sensors to detect and avoid both mobile and static impediments, allowing them to navigate campus with ease. Autonomous mobile robots are collaborative and can function with humans and around obstacles. Autonomous mobile robots utilize mapping software to create routes, and a fleet management system determines which paths are best for pickup or delivery.
Growth in e-commerce industry across the globe has resulted in need for efficient warehousing and inventory management. Increase in e-commerce activities, and customer demand has forced companies to adopt automation solutions in order to fulfill rising consumer demand. For instance, in August 2021, FedEx subsidiary FedEx Ground implemented a new AI-enabled robotics system to handle thousands of small packages daily as it seeks new innovations to meet demand in e-commerce delivery. The robotic systems are also used at FedEx Ground’s station in Queens, New York. These systems can autonomously pick, identify, sort, collect, and containerize small packages at scale. Moreover, customer demand for same day delivery is also creating the need for automation systems, which in turn, is expected to drive the growth of the market during the forecast period.
Warehouse drones are autonomous robots used in warehouse and logistics operations. They are equipped with sensors, cameras, and navigational tools that allow them to move around and interact with their surroundings. They can move about in three dimensions, fetch objects from high shelves, and communicate with other automation systems. Warehouse drones can operate independently, following pre-programmed paths or responding to real-time data. They have the ability to improve operational efficiency and speed, decrease the need for human labor, and modernize warehouse and logistics management.
The use of AMRs in agriculture has numerous advantages, including increased efficiency, lower labor costs, and more informed crop management decisions. AMRs can be used to automate operations like planting, harvesting, and crop monitoring, resulting in higher yields and revenues. They can also be outfitted with sensors that assess moisture, nutrient levels, and identify disease in real-time, allowing farmers to make more informed decisions regarding irrigation, fertilization, and pest management. AMRs can also analyze soil and automate livestock management duties. Farmers may handle labor shortages, reduce manual labor, and increase production by employing AMRs.
AMR manufacturers have grabbed this opportunity and partnered for further development of AMR for agriculture. For instance, in June 2022, Octiva, a Dutch-Belgian technology company, partnered with Continental to develop autonomous mobile robotic solutions for horticultural applications. The partnership follows Continental’s statement that it has begun volume manufacture of autonomous mobile robots for intralogistics.
The new AMRs developed in collaboration with Octiva will be part of Continental’s second product line “Agriculture” in the autonomous mobile robot industry. In addition, in February 2022, Augean Robotics, Inc. showcased a Burro at the 2022 World Ag Expo in Tulare, CA. It highlighted the possibilities of a Burro through a demonstration of the onboard user interface (UI). Burro is an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) developed to work in the field or in plant nurseries alongside farm workers.
Owing to these advantages, logistic service providers implemented autonomous drones in their warehouses. For instance, in July 2022, PFS, an eCommerce order fulfilment company and a division of PFSweb, Inc., announced a partnership with Vimaan, a technology supplier of computer vision-enabled solutions for warehouse inventory tracking, control, and management. PFS is initially integrating Vimaan's StorTRACK AIR, a self-flying warehouse drone, to automate inventory tracking activities within one of PFS's Memphis-based fulfilment operations that stores, picks, packs, and distributes merchandise for leading brands. PFS launched autonomous drone technology for real-time inventory tracking in order to improve accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
The market is driven by greater need for improved efficiency & workforce safety, growth in e-commerce, adoption of industry 4.0 technologies, and advancements in robotics technologies. Advancements in robotic technologies have resulted in the development of autonomous robots that can be programmed to perform tasks with no human intervention. Artificial intelligence based autonomous robots improve speed and accuracy of routine operations within warehouse as well as reduce the risk of employee injury in dangerous environments.
Moreover, autonomous robots are aiding companies in decreasing long-term costs; providing labor and utilization stability; increasing worker productivity; reducing error rate; optimizing picking & sorting time; and increasing access to difficult locations. However, high initial investment is hampering the growth of the global market. On the contrary, adoption of autonomous vehicles & drones, and greater demand for warehouse automation from emerging economies are expected to create ample growth opportunities for the global market.
