An acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is a device which can be used for controlling the power, frequency or spatial direction of a laser beam with an electrical drive signal. It is based on the acousto-optic effect, i.e. the modification of the refractive index by the oscillating mechanical pressure of a sound wave.
Generally, Acousto-optic modulator help to adjust the output power of laser beam. The acousto-optic has much higher modulation frequency than optical modulator. It has higher Extinction Ratio (>1000:1) than Electro-optic modulation, with lower driving power and lower price. It also have better laser beam quality. It's smaller than Mechanical modulators.
